Gohan

Bio
Gohan is the first son of Goku and Chi Chi. We see him for the first time at the beginning of DBZ as a young boy of 4. When Raditz arrives, Gohan is taken hostage, and his hidden potential is revealed. The blow he delivers to Raditz enables Goku and Piccolo to win. Following the battle with Raditz, Goku dies and Gohan is taken by Piccolo for special training, in order to prepare for the arrival of Vegita and Nappa. Piccolo makes Gohan more independant by leaving him in the wilderness alone for months. After the survival training is finished Piccolo trains Gohan to fight. The two grow quite fond of eachother during this year.
During the battle with Nappa, Gohan loses confidence, and lets the other fighters down. However, Gohan never becomes as confident and determined as his father. We see another occurance of this lack of confidence versus Cell. Conceivalbly Gohan could have been the strongest fighter in the universe, but he constantly feels pressure from his mom to concentrate on his academics. Because of this Gohan probably never reaches his full potential. He has a younger brother, Goten, and eventually marries Videl and they have daughter named Pan (DBGT character).
Goku

Bio
Goku is THE main character. He is of a powerful race known as Saiyans, originally from the Planet Vegita, and was sent to Earth as a baby to conquer it. After falling into a ravine, Goku hits his head, and forgets his mission. He grows up on Earth and becomes the planet's greatest champion of good. When Raditz, Goku's older brother, comes to Earth, Goku learns of his Saiyan heritage. Despite being weak for a Saiyan (3rd Class Warrior), Goku's determination, extreme training, and most of all his shear love for fighting allow him to surpass everyone in power. He was the first to reach Super Saiyan 1 and 3 in DBZ. Goku is a simple, kind hearted, brave warrior. He is married to Chi Chi and has 2 sons, Gohan and Goten.
Piccolo

Bio
Piccolo is the offspring of Daimon, who was the "evil half" of Kami. This makes Piccolo and Kami the same person in 2 bodies. If one dies, the other will as well. Goku fought Daimon in the original Dragonball series. Upon being killed by Goku, Daimon released his offspring Piccolo, to defeat Goku, and thus avenge his death.
Due to Raditz's arrival, Piccolo finds that he must team up w/Goku to defeat Goku's older brother. Following the battle, Piccolo learns of 2 more powerful Saiyans, who were on their way to Earth, and will arrive in one year. During the fight with Raditz, Gohan revealed astonishing power. Realizing that Gohans power would be an asset against the other Saiyans, Piccolo decides to train the boy.
After training Gohan for a year, Piccolo grows fond of the boy, and sacrifices himself to save Gohan in the battle with Nappa. His training also made Gohan more independent and self-confident. His fondness of Gohan is evident throughout DBZ, although Gohan eventually surpasses his mentor in power. Like Vegita, Piccolo was bad, turned good, and doesn't have strong feelings for alot of the other Z-fighters. He's more of a no nonsense military type.. although his character's personality changes somewhat throughout the series.
Vegita

Bio
Being the son of King Vegita, makes Vegita the one and only "Prince of Saiyans." He possesed extraordinary power from the time of birth, originally worked for Freeza with Nappa and Raditz as his followers. After Raditz's death, Vegita came to Earth with Nappa looking for the Dragonballs (it was his goal to overthrow Freeza). Instead he met his match in Goku, but escaped and returned to Freeza's base. After healing, he was shocked to learn that Freeza was on the Planet Namek looking for Dragonballs. Furious, he immediately departed for Namek, attempting to obtain the Dragonballs before Freeza did. Despite his vast power, Vegita met stiff opposition on Namek, and reluctantly joined Gohan, Krillin, Goku..
During the battle with Freeza he is eventually killed. He is brought back life by the Dragonballs, and then brought to Earth. He eventually joins the Z-fighters, marries Bulma, and together they have a child named Trunks. Even later in the series Vegita remains an outsider in the Z-team, and never loses his Saiyan pride. He is obssessed with power, and is very jealous of Goku's strength. Vegita in many ways was inspired by Goku.
Gotenks

Bio
Gotenks is a saiyan formed by the fusion of Chibi Trunks and Goten in the Buu Saga and in DBZ movies. Goten and Trunks were taught by Goku, Piccolo, and Krillin the special technique used to fuse warriors. Gotenks first battle is with Fat Buu in which Gotenks doesn't go SSJ and is beat by Buu. After that Gotenks fights Buu in his second form and almost beats him after turning SSJ 3. Gotenks is one of the most powerful fused saiyans and if Goten and Trunks were to fuse in GT their power would be limitless.
